How much thread for your leather seam?
Too short a thread cannot be cleanly rescued mid-seam in saddle stitching; too long a thread tangles and frays from repeatedly passing through the leather. This tool gives the length to cut, from your seam and the thickness sewn — the “×4 rule”, refined.

The method
At every stitch, the thread does not just travel the surface: it dives through the thickness, comes back out, and — in saddle stitching — the second thread makes the reverse trip. Consumption is therefore proportional to seam length, with a multiplier that grows with thickness.
The workshop rule says “four times the seam”: it is exact for saddle stitch through 2–3 mm of leather. This calculation generalises it: 3 times the length plus 0.4 per millimetre of thickness for saddle stitch, and about half that for a running or machine seam (bobbin thread not counted).

Good to know
- Cut 15–20% more than the strict calculation while you are learning: a mid-seam splice stays visible in saddle stitching, a thread offcut costs nothing.
- Beyond 1.5 m of thread per needle, every stitch becomes a pulling chore and the thread frays en route: split very long seams at corners or hidden points.
- The calculation assumes classic waxed thread (0.5–0.8 mm linen or braided polyester). Very thick thread on widely spaced stitches uses slightly less; very fine and tight, slightly more.
- For machine sewing, the result covers the top thread: add the same again for the bobbin.
- Measure the seam along the ACTUAL line, curves included — on a rounded gusset, the template’s straight-line chord lies by 10–15%.

- Where does the “four times the length” rule come from?

From saddle-stitch geometry: each thread travels about twice the seam (the surface plus the dives through the thickness), and there are two threads. On thin leather it lands near ×3.5; on a thick belt, near ×5–6 — exactly the spread the thickness coefficient corrects.
- What if the thread runs out before the seam does?

Back up two or three stitches, restart with fresh thread through the same holes, then bury and trim the old ends flush — ideally on the back or in a hidden area. It is clean but never invisible on the face side: hence cutting the right length from the start.
- Which thread size for which leather?

Simple guide: fine goods (wallets, 1.5–3 mm leather) with 0.45–0.55 mm thread; bags and belts (3–6 mm) with 0.6–0.8 mm; harness work above that. The thread should fill the awl hole without forcing it — too thick tears stitches, too thin leaves them gaping.
- Linen or polyester: does it change the length?

No — the stitch geometry is identical. The difference lies elsewhere: waxed linen splices and burnishes better (the saddlery tradition), braided polyester resists abrasion and moisture better (daily-use items). Plan the same 15–20% margin with both.
- Does stitches-per-inch matter?

Surprisingly little for length: tighter stitches dive more often but advance less each time — the two effects nearly cancel. Spacing (3–4 mm for fine goods, 5 mm+ for luggage) is chosen for strength and looks, not thread economy.
